Placing a Wholesale Order

Heartfelt has not placed any minimum quantities on wholesale orders. We are all small businesses ourselves, and we know the barrier that minimum orders can present. We do, however, offer tiered pricing for orders larger than 100 pairs of insoles and special discounted pricing for alpaca farms.

To place a wholesale order, simply fill out our online order form and we will get back to you with an invoice that includes the shipping cost.

If insoles are an appropriate product for your store and you'd like to start slowly, consider starting with Heartfelt insoles.  You can click here to watch a video about how easily Heartfelt insoles sell themselves.

Ordering Insoles Made from Your Own Fiber

Ordering Insoles Made from Your Own Fiber

Here's the math:

Cost
One pound of fiber processed by Zeilinger Wool $8.95
Shipping fiber to Zeilinger per pound $1.00
Subtotal for processing fiber into batts $9.95
Processing cost per finished pound with 10% loss at the mill $11.06
Heartfelt manufacture of 8 pairs of insoles @ $6.00 per pair $48.00
Shipping insoles from Heartfelt to your farm @ $1.00 per pound $1.00
Total cost to convert 1 pound of fiber to insoles $60.06
Gross Income
Sale of 8 pairs of insoles @ $15 per pair $120.00
Net Income per Pound $59.94

Notes on the Math

  • Fiber loss at the mill is variable, depending largely upon how clean the fiber is.
  • We usually get between 8 and 8.5 pairs of insoles per pound of batting, so your actual yield may be a little higher than in this example.
  • Shipping costs vary widely with the weight, destination, and method of shipment. The shipping cost per pound in this example assumes an order of more than one pound.

How It Works
The first step is to decide which fiber and how much you want to turn into insoles. We can felt pretty much any fiber you send us. Most people use coarser fiber and keep the best for yarns and other finer garments. We require a minimum of 20 pounds of fiber to create insoles with your fiber.

With your fiber, we will label the insoles with your farm's label, and we will work with you to create a custom label. Email Mary at mary@heartfeltalpaca.com to arrange for your custom label and to let us know you are planning to send us fiber. If the order is a large one, we will send you a contract for the work.

The next step is to arrange with a mill to turn your fiber into batts. We do not require that you use Zeilinger Wool, however we do require that you send us batts which are 60x90 inches and weigh 2 to 2.25 pounds each. Zeilinger Wool (zwool.com) in Frankenmuth, Michigan processes all the Heartfelt fiber and is familiar with the types of batts that we need.

Ship your fiber to the mill and have them drop ship it to Heartfelt. If you have a large quantity, we can pick it up at the freight depot. Just have the mill tell the freight company to let us know when to expect it and when it arrives.

Once the fiber arrives, we will make it into the products you have ordered and invoice you for the job. We will ship the products to you once payment is received. We turn many orders around in a couple weeks, and certainly the majority of orders go out within a month of receipt of the fiber. Larger orders and orders received during the holiday rush typically take a bit longer. If the delivery schedule is important, let us know and we can get back to you with an estimate for how long your order will take.

Getting Your Fiber Made into Batts

If you'd like Heartfelt to make fiber from your farm into products that you can sell or felt sheets that you can use to make your own products, we recommend Zeilinger Wool in Michigan.  We have found them easy to work with and accomodating to the weight and size batts that we need for uniform products.  You can reach them on the web at www.zwool.com, by email at info@zwool.com, or by phone at 989-652-2920.

Heartfelt's Production Capacity

Heartfelt's USDA Grant

During 2014 and 2015, Heartfelt has funding via a USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant to explore the question of how a small agricultural business can reach a national market and still have time to make products. As part of this project, we are experimenting with strategies for making our bookkeeping more efficient and for marketing our products. We will be sharing template files and the results of our efforts as we learn more about what does and doesn't work for us. Watch this page for more information as we begin to accumulate template files, how-to files, and results data that we can share.

7/18/15 Update - We are scheduled to share our grant activities, products and results as part of the FeltLoom workshop in Sharpsburg, Kentucky on the weekend of September 11-13 and again at the Heartfelt studio in Columbia, Missouri on November 7.  If you would like to register for the Heartfelt workshopin Columbia, click here for the registration form.  As always, feel free to send us a note at info@heartfeltalpaca.com if you have questions.

11-7-15 Update - We are grateful to everyone who came today for our SARE workshop.  We have now uploaded all of our project files to Dropbox.com, so that anyone who is interested should be able to get to the files by clicking HERE.  If that doesn't work for you, just email us, and we'll manually add you to the Dropbox folder.
